Dive Belize – Placencia & Whale Sharks
Whale Shark Diving at Gladden Spit Placencia Belize
Placencia is located 76 miles south of Belize City and over the past few years has become famous for the annualmigrations of Whale Sharks that visit Belize March thru July each year.
The Sharks come to feed on the eggs of the spawning Cubera Snapper that shoal in there thousands in the Gladden spit area about 1 and a half hour boat ride away from Placencia.
As with any dive there are no Guarantee’s when you dive Gladden Split but your chances are very high that you will see the Whale Sharks during your day of diving.
The good thing is in the unlikely event you dont see them, the dive is excellent as you will see hundreds of giant Cubera Snappers and big shoals of fish and possibly Bull Sharks that also come in for feeding on the Snappers.
This Video Footage was Taken at Gladden Spit in Belize
Gladden Spit is a protected area as are the Whale Sharks. All dive trips to dive and snorkel with the Whale Sharks are controlled and managed by the Belize Fisheries Department.
Each licensed dive operator is allocated a time slot to be able to dive there guests at Gladden Spit, this eliminates too many divers in the water at any one time.
Dive trips leave Placencia based on the time slot they are allocated, this time changes each day to allow dive operators flexability and the best chance to see the Whale Sharks.
If you intend on visiting Placencia just to dive with the Whale Sharks its best to plan to visit Placencia for at least 3 nights with 2 days Whale Shark Diving to increase your chances of seeing the Whale Sharks.
The Whale Shark experience has overshadowed the other great diving available from Placencia, such as laughing Bird Caye and the Silk cayes which offer excellelent diving.
Most dives departing from Placencia require a boat ride of around 45 minutes to 1 hour and a half depending on where you are going to be diving so all dive trips will take up most of your day.
You can also access Glovers Atoll which in my opinion is the very best diving in Belize I dove it a few years ago and it was unbeleivable diving which also confirms what Jaques Cousteau said when he dove Glovers on the Calypso saying it was in the top 3 places in the world he had dived.
I have teamed up with some of the best dive operators in Placencia to offer you the chance to Dive Placencia and Dive with the Whale Sharks,
